Bird watching & boating @ vembanadu lake, Kumarakom

Boating through the vembanadu lake and water channels in Kumarakom, the backwater tourism village of Kerala. Reaching the bird-sanctuary you can get the tickets for boating in KTDC boats from the counter at the front.

Remember you have options of either not to go boating and take the ticket to enter the bird-sanctuary for walking or to take the boating ticket which includes the entry pass to walk through the bird sanctuary. We took a 8 seater boat which coasted around INR 600/- which lasted half an hour journey through  the backwaters.

Two seasons for bird watching is here in the sanctuary. One is from November to February when the migratory birds visits the place. The other bird watching season is from June to August when you may witness the local birds here. The siberian migratory siberian cranes are said to be a not to miss attraction when you visit here.

A canoe resting aside the river channel. A shot from under the hull of our boat. This canal leads to the starting point of the boat journey, ie to the entrance of the bird sanctuary. Canals like this are made throughout the sanctuary to keep the wetland as it is with an extra purpose of canoe boating through the forests which may help us watch the birds closely.

At last we came to see a bird. Seeing the birds in the sanctuary is not that easy for they hardly comes near to human presence. Am not sure about this bird's name but expects to be waterfowl. This photo is taken with optical zoom during the boat trip. The best time for watching the birds is during early mornings.

Some of the local birds in this sanctuary are waterfowl, owl, egret, cuckoo, heron, water-ducks, wood beetles, cormorant, moorhen, darter, brahminy kite etc.

Migratory birds includes Siberian stork, parrots, teal, larks, fly catchers, Siberian crane etc. Migratory birds from Himalayas and Siberia visits here during seasons.

The natural process of migration done by these birds astonishes scientists in the matter, how they comes in the same time of the year to the same place and sometimes seen in the same tree after traveling through such long distances.

An island named pathiramanal is also a bird watching spot here and you can reach there by means of boats. Don't miss the kuttanadan delicious dishes and the lush green paddy fields, coconut groves etc.

  1. I would love to walk through the bird sanctuary. I had a chance to walk through the outdoor aviary in Hong Kong and it was magical. Very nice photos.
